What a week! Pavin back in winner's circle

Golf Betting Lines

07/31/2006 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Corey Pavin finally broke back into the winner's circle on the PGA Tour Sunday when he captured the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

Pavin's last victory came at the 1996 Colonial and Sunday's trip to the winner's circle was his 15th on the PGA Tour.

He posted a final-round, three-under 67 to win the tournament at 20-under-par 260 to cap off an amazing week for the 46-year-old Pavin, who won the 1995 U.S. Open.

On Thursday, Pavin established a new PGA Tour record for lowest nine-hole score with a 26 on the front nine at Brown Deer Park Golf Club. By the time the second round ended Saturday morning, he matched the tour record for lowest total for an opening-36 holes with a 125.

Now he hoisted the trophy for the second time in Milwaukee. Pavin won the title in 1986, but Sunday he pocketed a check for $720,000, or roughly 10 times the check when he won 20 years ago.

Jerry Kelly, a hometown favorite trying to win an event he considers a major championship, got within two on Sunday but came up short again. He collected his second runner-up finish in Milwaukee after a final-round, three-under 67. Kelly came in at 18-under-par 262.

Jeff Sluman fired a six-under 64 and finished third at minus-17. Frank Lickliter birdied the final hole to shoot a one-under 69 and tie for fourth place with D.J. Trahan, who also carded a 69 on Sunday. The pair finished at 15-under-par 265.

Pavin's march toward victory was on hold for two hours as a severe storm pounded Brown Deer. Once play started, Pavin was solid with four pars to open his round.

At the par-three fifth, Pavin drained a 17-foot birdie putt to move to 18- under par and three clear of Kelly, as the final round became primarily a two- player race.

Kelly birdied six to get within two, but Pavin hit the shot of the day at the eighth to grab a huge edge. His tee ball was not long, as few of Pavin's are, and he hit a six-iron for his second. Pavin's approach took a few hops, then rolled into the cup for an eagle and a four-shot lead.

From there, both players made pars despite having decent looks at birdie putts. Pavin holed a seven-foot par putt at the 10th that he did not think was going in, but maintained his four-stroke advantage.

Kelly came back at the par-three 11th when his tee ball ran to three feet. He converted the birdie try to close the gap to three. With Pavin consistently making pars, Kelly had to take advantage of his best birdie opportunities.

At the par-five 15th, Pavin could only make a par, but Kelly, who ripped a drive almost through the fairway, reached the green in two. His 35-foot eagle putt did not fall, but he tapped in for birdie and found himself two behind with three to play.

Both players parred the 16th and 17th holes, but with a reachable par-five for the closing hole, there was still drama. Pavin could not get home in two so he laid up down the fairway, but Kelly had the length to reach, but his ball took a bad hop into thick rough.

Neither player could make birdie, but that was fine for Pavin as he walked off with the win.

Woody Austin (65), Joey Sindelar (67) and Billy Andrade (68) shared sixth place at 14-under-par 266. Dicky Pride (63), Dean Wilson (63), K.J. Choi (64) and Nathan Green (69) tied for ninth place at minus-13.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
