10/03/2008 - Salt Lake City, UT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Louie Sakoda drilled home a 38-yard field goal as time expired, giving 15th-ranked Utah a 31-28 victory over Oregon State in non-conference action.
New Thursday, different result for the Beavers (2-3), who stunned the college football world with a 27-71 victory over former No.1 USC in the Trojans' house of horrors in Corvallis last Thursday.
The Beavers appeared on the verge of another marquee victory, leading 28-20 late in the fourth quarter before Utah ran off 11 points in the final 1:28.
Brian Johnson found Brandon Godfrey on a skinny post down the middle for a 45- yard scoring strike to make the score 28-26. After a failed two-point attempt was nullified thanks to a pass interference penalty, Johnson bootlegged to the right and raced to the corner for the successful conversion in a tie game
After a Beavers punt, the Utes (6-0) raced into field-goal position and Sakoda converted on his third consecutive try of the night.
Johnson completed 17-of-30 passes for 201 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while Brent Casteel caught five passes for 105 yards and ran for 20 more and a touchdown.
Lyle Moevao finished 21-of-31 for 313 yards and two touchdowns, while Jacquizz Rodgers -- the star of the victory over USC -- finished with 101 yards on the ground and one touchdown along with 76 receiving yards.
The first half featured plenty of fireworks. The Beavers picked up where they left off last Thursday night against the Trojans, marching 60 yards on eight plays to take the early lead. Moevao found James Rodgers for 15 yards on the first play and tossed a deft 43-yard pass to Rodgers again later in the march. Moevao was buried behind the line by Mike Wright inside the Utes 20-yard line, but Justin Kahut put points on the scoreboard with a 37-yard boot.
Utah, unlike USC last Thursday, wasted little time striking back. Johnson moved the chains with an 11-yard toss to Godfrey and sprinted for 15 yards to push the football to the Beavers 24-yard line. Sakoda was true from 33 yards away to square the contest.
The Beavers' defense joined the fray as Al Afalava stepped in front of a pass and rolled 26 yards into the end zone. Kahut's extra point missed, but Oregon State seized a 9-3 advantage.
Another unit, the Utah special teams, added to the contest on the following kickoff. David Reed sprinted 79 yards on the kick return to the Beavers 15- yard line, but the defense held and Sakoda split the uprights from 29 yards away.
Utah started with good field position after an Oregon State punt and marched 60 yards on six plays to paydirt. The big play, Johnson's 40-yard pitch-and- catch with Casteel, moved the football inside the Beavers 20-yard line. Johnson then found Freddie Brown for the 14-yard scoring strike and a 13-9 edge.
Moevao was sacked and fumbled on the next series, allowing Nai Fotu to fall on the football at the Beavers 27-yard line. Casteel used his speed, athleticism and resiliency to reach the end zone on the march's fifth play. He reversed field to the left sideline and won the foot race to the pylon for a 12-yard rushing score and a 20-9 edge.
The Beavers put more points on the scoreboard prior to halftime as a quick four-play, 80-yard touchdown drive featured a Jacquizz Rodgers 33-yard burst and a 27-yard screen pass to the same running back. Moevao's seam pass to the right shoulder of wide receiver Shane Morales was hauled in for a 24-yard score, and a failed two-point attempt kept the score at 20-15.
The Beavers continued to play catch-up with the extra point try, but did seize the lead after a Johnson fumble in Utah territory early in the third stanza. Moevao found Sammie Stroughter for 18 yards and Morales for nine yards before Jacquizz Rodgers moved his way into the end zone from seven yards out. The two-point pass failed, but Oregon State held a slim 21-20 lead.
The seeming insurance came via the pass late in the fourth quarter. A swing pass turned into a Jacquizz Rodgers' 41-yard play, as he sliced around and through the Utes defense. Moevao's two-yard toss to tight end Brady Camp with 2:18 to play put the Beavers in front, 28-20.
Game Notes
Godfrey caught five passes for 52 yards in the win...James Rodgers was Oregon State's leading receiver with five catches for 82 yards...Oregon State netted 405 total yards to 337 for Utah...The Beavers downed the Utes, 24-7, in last season's opener...Oregon State still leads the all-time series, 9-5-1.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.

NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37
NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road
In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.
Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):
* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games
Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.
Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.
Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.
That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.
Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.
