Top-5 clash pits Buckeyes against Gators

Cbasketball Betting Lines

12/23/2006 - Gainesville, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - In what promises to be the best game on the college slate today, the third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and fifth-ranked Florida Gators will do battle in Gainesville.

Ohio State has met the defending National Champion 26 times in its history and owns a 5-21 record in such games. However, it is hard to argue that this team of Buckeyes is one of the strongest the program has ever boasted. The club has won four straight games since its only loss of the season, a narrow setback to national powerhouse North Carolina on the road. On Tuesday, Ohio State rolled to a 75-56 decision over Iowa State, and all 10 wins have come by double figures.

Florida has its last three meetings with top-five teams, so expect the mighty Gators to play with confidence today. With three straight victories, Florida has improved to 10-1 overall, and the only loss came on the road to Florida State by four points. The Gators are coming off an 88-67 romp over Stetson, and although the non-conference schedule has been rather weak, the club did knock off Kansas back in late November.

Ohio State holds a 5-2 edge in the all-time series with Florida, although the schools have not met on the hardwood in 18 years. This game marks just the second ever meeting between top five teams at Florida.

While Ohio State does have plenty of capable scorers in the lineup, the team's strong play at the defensive end can not be overlooked. The Buckeyes have held their last four opponents under 60 points, and that feat has been accomplished eight times in 11 outings. They are racking up 83.1 ppg on 51.7 percent shooting from the floor, including 41.2 percent from three-point range, and they are limiting the opposition to 62.2 ppg on 38.4 percent overall efficiency. Perhaps the most scary thing about this Ohio State team is that many of the best players are freshmen. Daequan Cook has been a scoring machine since his first game, and he leads the team with 16.1 ppg despite the fact that he is averaging fewer than 24 minutes of action per game off the bench. Greg Oden, the nation's top recruit, has played four games since his return from wrist surgery, and he is netting 15.5 ppg on 73.5 percent shooting from the floor to go along with 8.5 rpg and 16 blocks. Another freshman, Mike Conley Jr., has run the point like a senior, and he is contributing 9.7 ppg to go along with team highs of 71 assists and 29 steals. Add Ron Lewis (15.3 ppg) and Ivan Harris (11.4 ppg) to the mix , and it is hard to imagine Ohio State losing very often this season. In the romp over Iowa State, Cook was brilliant as usual with 21 points, and Oden finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. The Buckeyes shot 52.8 percent from the floor, committed only eight turnovers and earned a 13-2 edge in points from the foul line.

Center Al Horford leads Florida in scoring and rebounding (13.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg), but he has missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain and is not expected to assume his normal starting position for the Gators today. That loss will undoubtedly hurt the team, although there is plenty of talent in place to pick up the slack. Taurean Green is netting 12.8 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor, including 44.4 percent from three-point range, and he has dished out 51 assists. Joakim Noah, who may have been the top pick in the last NBA Draft if he didn't return to school, checks in with 12.5 ppg on 66.3 percent shooting from the field, and he is pulling down 7.7 rpg as well. Corey Brewer adds 11.1 ppg to the lineup, while Walter Hodge and Lee Humphrey are solid offensive contributors as well. Hodge tallied 17 points off the bench in the most recent win over Stetson, and Noah posted 16 points and eight boards in that clash. Brewer contributed 16 points, and Green posted 11 points and eight assists. The Gators made good on 60.7 percent of their field goal attempts and finished with 24 assists against 11 turnovers.
