Soldier's Dancer marches to victory in Tropical Park Derby

Horseracing Betting Lines

01/01/2007 - Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Soldier's Dancer, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, came roaring down the stretch to capture Monday's $100,000 Tropical Park Derby at Calder Race Course. The grade 3 race is the first graded stakes race of the new year.

January 1st brings a new year and is the kick-off of the road to the 2007 Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Last year Barbaro won the Tropical Park Derby on his way to taking the Run for the Roses.

Soldier's Dancer, sent off as the 3-2 favorite, raced near the back of nine horse field. Storm in May set the pace up the backstretch while being pressured by Sedgefield and Pickapocket. Loose Leaf raced fourth along the rail.

Around the turn for home Storm in May and Sedgefield seperated themselves from the rest of the field. Entering the stretch they continued battling for the lead.

In mid-stretch Soldier's Dancer came roaring from the outside to overtake the leaders. Soldier's Dancer drew clear in deep stretch and won by 3/4's of a length.

Finishing second was Sedgefield with Storm in May holding on for third. Rounding out the order of finish was Rutledge Cat, Delightful Kiss, On My Dime, Pickapocket, Loose Leaf and Northern Academy.

Rutledge Cat, owned by Herman Greenberg, was ridden by Edgar Prado who was aboard Barbaro last year.

The time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.95 on the turf course listed as good.

Soldier's Dancer, owned by Herman Heinlein, was making his third straight start on the Calder grass course. Trained by David Vivian, Soldier's Dancer won the Appleton Juvenile and was second last time out in the Kris S. Stakes.

"After this performance today, I might have to say he's the best horse I've ever trained," said Vivian, "and I still think he'll run on dirt. That's probably where we'll go next with him at Gulfstream, maybe the Holy Bull."

"This is a very good horse because he got into some trouble and overcame it nicely," Velasquez noted. "He showed me today that even without any pace up front to run at he could still finish and give whatever you needed to get the job done. His last quarter mile was very fast."

The Tropical Park Derby win was worth $60,000 to bring the three-year-old gelding's earnings to $183,420. Soldier's Dancer has now won four of nine starts and, of course, is perfect in 2007.

Soldier's Dancer returned $5.00, $3.00 and $2.60. Sedgefield paid $7.80 and $5.20, and Storm in May paid $4.00 for show. Storm in May been third his last three starts.
