Goodwood Handicap has 11 set to run

Horseracing Betting Lines

09/24/2008 - Arcadia, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Four weeks until Santa Anita plays host to the 25th Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, this Saturday the track will be the scene of the $500,000 Goodwood Handicap for older horses. The winner of the Goodwood gains entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic through the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" program.

A total of 11 thoroughbreds, including two three-year-olds, have been entered in the 1 1/8 mile race on Santa Anita's new synthetic track. Defending winner Tiago is back along with Arlington Million champ Spirit One.

Tiago will start from post eight with regular rider Mike Smith in the saddle. Trained by John Shirreffs for Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss, Tiago's lone win this year was the Oaklawn Handicap back in April.

The four-year-old colt was sixth in the Hollywood Gold Cup last time out after a second in the Californian. Early this year he posted a third in the San Fernando, was runner-up in the Strub and fourth in the Santa Anita Handicap. In his career Tiago has won five of 15 starts for better than $1.7 million.

Turf runner Spirit One will make his first start on the main track in the Goodwood. The four-year-old has raced exclusively on grass in his 18 career starts.

"I think it will be easier for him on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride," said Francoise, wife of trainer Jean-Pierre Dupuis, "because it is a new synthetic. But, we'll know for sure after the race. The horse is not nominated for the Breeders' Cup yet, so he would be running for $400,000 in the Goodwood (excluding $100,000 from the Breeders Cup Fund). The owners haven't decided whether to pay the $150,000 (Breeders Cup supplemental fee) before the Goodwood or not."

Spirit One is owned by Kamel Chehboub and has earned $1.1 million with five wins in 18 career starts. The colt will be ridden again by Ioritz Mendizabal from post nine. He went wire-to-wire, with Mendizabal, in winning the Arlington Million in August.

Trainer Eoin Harty sends out Pacific Classic runner-up Well Armed in the Goodwood. The five-year-old gelding will break from post seven with Aaron Gryder back to ride.

"It's a good stepping stone," Harty said. "It's a month out from the big one, so you ought to be plenty fit now and easy to keep fit between now and the big day. The Goodwood is a good spot for Well Armed. It's an important race, and it's a Grade I. Everybody wants to win a Grade I."

Well Armed has earned more than $1.23 million for WinStar Farm. His five wins in 18 lifetime starts is highlighted by this year's San Diego and San Antonio Handicap victories.

He was third to Curlin in the Dubai World Cup and second in the San Pasqual Handicap.

Here is the complete field for the Goodwood in post position order: Zappa, Joel Rosario; Tres Borrachos, Tyler Baze; Informed, Martin Garcia; Surf Cat, David Flores; Slew's Tiznow, Alonso Quinonez; Albertus Maximus, Garrett Gomez; Well Armed, Aaron Gryder; Tiago, Mike Smith; Spirit One, Ioritz Mendizabal; Mostacolli Mort, Martin Pedroza and Mast Track, John Velazquez.

The scheduled post-time for the 27th Goodwood is 8 p.m. (et).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING

NCAA Football Betting

Many fans thought it was the best side in the nation by the end of last season. This year, the polls have built on Georgia's momentum and granted it the No. 1 preseason ranking, followed by Ohio State and USC. (The Associated Press has the Buckeyes at No. 2; USA Today took the Trojans.)

"To have people believing we have one of the best teams in the nation going into this thing, it's exciting for us," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt told the AP. "I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we certainly have put ourselves in position where at least the college football world thinks we're pretty good."

Georgia Bulldogs - 9.5 wins

There's no question they're good, but the Bulldogs have one of the toughest 12-game schedules in the nation, mostly because they play in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference. Away games at No. 15 Arizona State, No. 7 LSU and No. 10 Auburn loom large, with contests between the hedges versus No. 24 Alabama and No. 18 Tennessee as well as the World's Largest Cocktail Party in Jacksonville versus No.5 Florida.

Ohio State Buckeyes - 10 wins

Like the Bulldogs, the Buckeyes also have a number of tough road contests in 2008. After two scrimmages dressed up as real games versus Youngstown State and Ohio, it's off to face USC. Other tough away games include No.13 Wisconsin in October and No. 20 Illinois in November. Granted, it should be pretty easy sledding at the Horseshoe. In fact, the only ranked team that travels to Columbus is No. 22 Penn State, in October.

USC Trojans - 10.5 wins

A similarly light schedule awaits the Trojans of Southern California, which is why the oddsmakers' total is one win more and the over is currently commanding -150 odds. Pete Carroll's troops only play three ranked teams in 2008, and all of those games are at home. After what should be an easy trip to Virginia to start things off on Aug. 30, the Trojans get two weeks to prepare for Ohio State in Los Angeles. Their two other ranked opponents, No. 21 Oregon and No. 15 Arizona State, visit in consecutive weeks to start the month of October. After that, the competition eases up. Of course, this is the same highly-touted school that lost to Stanford in 2007 and Oregon State in 2006. And don't discount the fact that USC plays its biggest rivals, Notre Dame and UCLA, back-to-back to close out the regular season. On paper, the Trojans are far superior, but motivation will be high for the Irish and Bruins, especially if their historic foes are in national-title contention.

Odds to Win the Heisman Trophy

Tim Tebow, Florida - 7/2
He won it last year, so it's no surprise he's the favorite to do it again, making him just the second player to go back-to-back. Ohio State's Archie Griffin turned the trick in 1974 and 1975, and Tebow's coach, Urban Meyer, is pretty sure his star quarterback can match the Buckeyes legend.

"There has never been anyone quite like him," Meyer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I am very lucky to be his coach."

Chris Wells, Ohio State - 5/1

The man they call "Beanie" was a star recruit out of high school, so it's not like nobody knew who the star tailback was before he rushed for 576 yards as a freshman in 2006 and 1,609 as a sophomore. But perhaps his finest moment came last year versus Michigan when he rumbled for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the Buckeyes' 14-3 victory over the hated Wolverines.

Knowshon Moreno, Georgia - 8/1

If the Bulldogs are to live up to expectations, they'll need a huge effort from their sophomore running back. This might be the last year of college ball for Moreno, who rushed for 1,334 yards and for 14 touchdowns as a freshman, while adding 253 receiving yards on 20 receptions, so expect big things for the man from Belford, N.J.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Will he or won't he?  Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.

Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.

"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."

Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.

Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.

Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback.  It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.

Here are the football odds as seen at MySportsbook.com and subject to change after February 10, 2007 if not locked in prior to that date.
